Richard Jackson (1602-1681) of Westmorland

 

Birds of a feather fly together. Three shovellors aka shelducks etc - such as the ones pictured above in the arms of the JACKSONs of Edenthorpe - are displayed on the family crests of many distantly related JACKSONs in England, Ireland and America, including the JACKSONs of Forkhill, Co. Armagh, as well as Sir Thomas JACKSON born in Co. Armagh, and later head of HSBC in Hong Kong.

Beneath is a family tree of the known descendants of Rev. Richard JACKSON of Kirkby Lonsdale and his two wives: Dorothy OTWAY & Jane CARTER. With these two wives, he sired twenty living children, many of whom made a significant impact on Ireland from the mid-1600s onwards. Much of this impact was positive, but not all of it. Let’s just say that some of them, like the JACKSONs of Coleraine, lived life large. I will describe some of their exploits - and exploit being the operative word - in a later post.

I have inserted three NOTEs – and will expand on them, again in a later blog post. I am noting them here because they are the nub of my rationale for suspecting that the JACKSONs of Forkhill, Co. Armagh are related to the JACKSONs of Urker, Co. Armagh. Until I can both write and then post the next bit, there is at least a wealth of research material at your fingertips.
